10 Tips to protect your privacy on Facebook

At a time when 26 million users of Facebook are worried about being the victim of a bug that reveals their private messages, "Le Nouvel Observateur" offers a guide to properly protect their privacy on the social network.
Check his identity

Upon registration, Facebook is picky and demanding accurate data. As a reminder, however, only the name, email address, date of birth and gender are required.

Subsequently, the social network still requires more information - employment, education, place of residence, relationship status, religion, political opinion, etc.. - All optional to use the platform. However, if the user decides to learn, it is possible to share with some friends. On your "About", select for each category "edit", then right-click on the logo. Then choose whether to make the information "public", accessible only to "friends" hidden ("me only"), or some friends set ("custom").

Check its status

"Express Yourself", encourages Facebook. But it is good to check who can and will get there. When publishing, you must click on the logo at the bottom of sharing dialog box, and select whether to make the message "service", accessible only to "friends" hidden ("only me"), or some friends defined ("custom").

For articles already published, they should be taken one at a time by clicking on the same logo and choose Sharing the same way that can be accessed.

Control its "Like"

Introduced in early 2009, the "Like" is one of the real successes of Facebook. However, with time, the "interests" accumulate and say (or not) a lot about you. Through your profile, you can view all of your "I like" window by clicking on the "I love legal" under the cover photo.

To hide your interest to some people, simply select "edit" then for each category to select the logo of sharing. "Public" will make the information available to the entire network, "friends" only to "friends", "me only" person, "custom" set to friends. Beyond interests, "Like" can be shared to the same categories of people using the same logo next to "other pages as you like". Click on this sentence also show a list of all the pages "liked", proposing to backtrack easily.

Check his photos

For each photo published, it is possible to choose to whom it is accessible. When publishing, you must click on the logo below to share box and choose to "public", accessible only to "friends" hidden ("only me"), or some friends set ("custom" ).

For the photos published already , open the image and click "edit" and select the logo of sharing. The parameters of all the photos in the same album can be changed in one click: open the album and click on the share button at the top.

If one of your friends you identify a photo, it is not possible to delete. However, you can "withdraw identification" by clicking on "options" after opening the image. Incidentally, it is possible to denounce his "friend" for "harassment" for "scam", "nudity", etc..

Check her friends

It is possible to choose who has access to your friends list. On the page listing your "friends" , select "edit" then the logo next to "who can see your friends list." Then choose whether to "public", accessible only to "friends" hidden ("me only"), or some friends set ("custom").

Check references to your friends

Your friends like to talk to you on Facebook? You can limit the damage. In the "Privacy Settings", choose "change settings" in part "newspaper and identification." You choose who can post on your wall and who can see what others publish.

Control their friends lists

To use easier sharing settings, it is possible to create "buddy lists" . Optionally, you can enter predefined lists by Facebook (close friends, acquaintances, family or small) or create your own lists (via the button "create a list"). The friends then add via "manage list". These groups can, in sharing information, status or photo, click to select a set of friends.

Check the plug contacts

You can become (almost) invisible on Facebook. First step: on the "Privacy Settings", select "change settings" in part "advertising, web sites and applications." Down, "public research", you can uncheck the "public research" to disappear from search engines.

Second step: back on the "Privacy Settings" and select "change settings" in part "handshake". You can choose who can find it using a search through your e-mail address or phone number, you can send invitations to become friends, and who can send you Facebook messages. For each parameter three options: "everyone", "friends and their friends', or just your" friends ".

Control its geolocation

Facebook gives users, especially those on mobile geotag their messages and photos. All are found then pinned on a world map, accessible from the profile. Not to geotag, care must be taken in a publication that the pin icon does not show your position. For older posts that you wish to withdraw the location, choose "Edit" then "change place" and then remove any indication.

In case one of your friends in a message identifies you, all accompanied by a geolocation, there has so far not possible to simply delete it. It will then remove your identification.

Controlling third-party applications

Facebook is now his wealth to the multitude of related applications. Applications however do not hesitate to publish constantly updates your status. In the "Privacy Settings", go to "advertisements, websites and applications", then "edit settings" "applications that you use."

Is displayed as a list of all third-party applications that have already been linked with your Facebook account. A click on the cross to the right and the link is removed. Click on "Edit" and you can select "who can see the publications in this application." Easy, but daunting when you have many applications.
